FACULTY BIOGRAPHIES

John Adams, M.D., DABMA
 

Dr. Adams is a graduate of the University of Nevada and University of
Alabama Schools of Medicine and was interned at the University of Iowa.
Physican and Surgeon license California. He is a founding diplomate of the
American Board of Holistic Medicine and the American Board of Medical
Acupunture. He has been a working preceptor with HMI for over a decade,
earning status as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Medical Acupunture, for his teaching efforts to doctors.

Dr. Adams qualified for the Arizona Homeopathic Medical License in 1988. He apprencticed from 1993-1997 with John C. Reed MD,MDH., Professional Member of Arizona Board of Homeopathic Medical Examiners . He currently directs the medical acupuncture clinic at the Hopi Health Care Center Hospital in Polacca, Arizona.

Dr. Adams also maintains a private practice and conducts research medicine in Sedona, Arizona. His wife Lou, is a graduate fine artist.

KATHY BISHOP, M.D., DABMA

  Travel and change have been at the center for Kathleen E. Moore Bishop, MD. She has gone from Southern California to Vassar College to the UCLA School of Medicine; from the University of Iowa for pediatrics and pathology to Colorado as a GS 13 ER Doc, then back to an Iowa anesthesia residency. After 25 years in allopathic medicine, she dove into medical acupuncture and felt revitalized. Her ideals and understanding of health and disease resonate with and mirror the paradigms of eastern philosophy. She is a senior preceptor for the UCLA/HMI Medical Acupuncture Course for Physicians, where, since 1996, she has helped students integrate the practice and philosophy of acupuncture and western medicine.

In addition to a half time acupuncture and anesthesia practice in Casa Grande, AZ, Kathy also has a private acupuncture practice in Tucson, AZ. She runs an acupuncture clinic for the Indian Health Service in Winslow, AZ, and is a consultant in acupuncture for the Gila River Indian Reservation in Sacaton, AZ.

Dr. Bishop is Board Certified in Anesthesia and Medical Acupuncture. She is a Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine, a Fellow of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the AAMA.

MARK BOSWELL, M.D. P.hD.
 

Mark V. Boswell, MD, PhD is Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and chief of the Anesthesiology Pain Service at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals of Cleveland. He is the director of the fellowship program in pain management at CWRU/UH, an ACGME-approved training program in graduate medical education. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology with added qualifications in Pain Management, by the American Academy of Pain Management and the American Board of Pain Medicine. Special interests include neuropathic pain, cancer pain and acupuncture. Dr. Boswell graduated from the Medical Acupuncture For Physicians course in 1997.

BRIAN BOUCH, M.D.
 

Brian Received his undergraduate medical training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, during which his interest in acupuncture began as information about its spectacular successes in China began to trickle across the iron curtain in the late 1960’s. After 12 years of practice in Emergency Medicine and Family Practice, he began his study of acupuncture with the UCLA Medical Acupuncture program. In 1986 he began to build a multispecialty integrated medical practice in Northern California.

Today that practice includes three physician acupuncturists, two licensed acupuncturists, two manipulative osteopaths, a naturopath, massage therapist, intuitive medical counselor, and sound therapist. His professional interests gravitate toward difficult-to-treat conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia, and in the integration of a broad range of CAM therapies with conventional medicine. He is the former medical director of Onebody Inc.,aka. Consensus Health Corp, who created the first multispecialty CAM provider networks nationwide for contracting discounted alternative medicine services to major health insurance company subscribers.

Dr. Bouch has been a preceptor in the Medical Acupuncture program since 1987, during which he has been instrumental in helping the course evolve to its current state of excellence. He has helped to successfully train thousands of physician acupuncturists. Dr. Bouch is a founding member of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture and a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture.

KENNETH CONKLIN, M.D.
  Dr. Conklin is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at the David Geffen
School of Medicine at UCLA. He practices integrative oncology, integrating
medical acupuncture, clinical nutrition, and herbal medicine with
conventional cancer therapies.

Dr. Conklin received his Ph.D in Pharmacology from the University of Hawaii
in 1971 and his M.D. from UCLA in 1974.

Following completion of an anesthesiology residency in 1977, he joined the faculty of the Department of Anesthesiology at UCLA where he served as the Director of Obstetric Anesthesia until 1997. He completed the Medical Acupuncture for Physicians course in 1997 and began his practice of integrative oncology at UCLA that year. Dr. Conklin has published extensively. His most recent review articles pertain to the use of acupuncture for the cancer patient and the use of nutritional supplements during chemotherapy. Dr. Conklin serves as a reviewer for the journal “Nutrition and Cancer” and as a consultant to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM).

MARTHA GROUT , M.D., DABMA
  Dr. Grout is Board Certified in Medical Acupuncture and Emergency Medicine. She received her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1971, and her acupuncture training from UCLA Medical Acupuncture for Physicians in 1997. She is President of the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, and has a private practice of Medical Acupuncture, in addition to a practice of Emergency Medicine in the Phoenix area. She received her homeopathic medical license in 1997.

Dr. Grout currently sits on the Arizona Acupuncture Board. She firmly believes that there is no true healing without the simultaneous involvement of body, mind and spirit.

JOSEPH M. HELMS, M.D.
  DR. JOSEPH HELMS is at the forefront of physician acupuncture education and propagation in the United States. Since 1980 he has chaired the “Medical Acupuncture for Physicians” program sponsored by the Office of Continuing Medical Education at the UCLA School of Medicine. 4,500 physicians have completed this rigorous training. 

Dr. Helms is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and the UCLA School of Medicine. He studied acupuncture in Paris at the French Medical Acupuncture Association. He is boarded in family medicine, pain management, and medical acupuncture.

Dr. Helms is founding president of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. He has served as consultant on the World Health Organization’s acupuncture scientific advisory committees that have established international training and practice standards. He participated on the advisory panel of the Office of Alternative Medicine, National institutes of Health, and presented to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Polity. He is in private practice in Berkeley, California, where he combines family medicine, medical acupuncture, and homeopathy.

IVAN IRIARTE, M.D.
  Dr. Ivan Iriarte received his MD degree from the University of Puerto Rico
Schhol of Medicine. He did his residency in Family Practice also at the
University of Puerto Rico Program. In the early eighties he lived for three
years in Iowa City, Iowa where he was a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow in Family Practice and completed a Master in Science in Preventive Medicine. He is Board-Certified in Family Practice and General Preventive Medicine.

For the last fifteen years, doctor Iriarte has been in the faculty at Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico, where he has a position of Associate Professor. He teaches Family Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He is also the coordintaor for the Medical School's Bioethics course.

In 1995, doctor Iriarte graduated from the UCLA Medical Acupuncture course. He is a member of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture and the Puerto Rico Medical Acupuncture Association. He served as President of the latter during 2001. At present his part-time medical practice is limited to Medical Acupuncture at the Center for Complimentary and Integrative Healthcare in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He has combined his passions for teaching and
acupuncture by his regular participation as a preceptor in the HMI Medical Acupuncture for Physicians clinical units. In addition, he teaches frequently in Medical Acupuncture seminars offered by the Puerto Rico Medical Acupuncture Association.

WAYNE JOWER, D.P.M., LAc.
  Dr. G. Wayne Jower is both a podiatrist and a licensed acupuncturist in Foster City, California, near San Francisco. Wayne has been in private practice in Foster City since 1976. He earned his doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the College of Podiatric Medicine (then located in San Francisco). Wayne first became interested in acupuncture in 1978 after he took his first acupuncture workshop. Since then, he has used acupuncture as an effective modality in treating foot and ankle problems.

In June 1996, Wayne went to chinese medical school to earn a Master of Science degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In May 2000, he became a diplomate in acupuncture and chinese herbology, and was subsequently licensed in California. ayne now practices both podiatry and acupuncture in his Foster City office. He also enjoys teaching Charting and Physical Examination at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and serving as a preceptor for the UCLA/HMI Medical Acupuncture For Physicians program. On Weekends, Wayne enjoys blowing his trumpet and singing with his parish music groups. He has a large family living in the Bay Area, including an identical twin brother (rumored to sub for him on various occasions).

ROB KASSAN, M.D.
 

Dr. Rob Kassan is a family physician in a large group practice in Santa
Monica, California. He began to treat patients with medical acupuncture in
to his outpatient practice in 1998. Initially a skeptic, Dr. Kassan has fully embraced and integrated acupuncture into his busy primary care office.

A graduate of UC Irvine, California College of Medicine in 1988, Dr. Kassan
received residency training and was a Chief Resident in Family Practice at
Santa Monica Hospital, a UCLA affiliate program.

Dr. Kassan is a founding partner of the Santa Monica Bay Physicians, a multispecialty medical group. As the Chairman of the Utilization Management committee for Bay Area Community Medical Group, Dr. Kassan provides administrative services for this large IPA, as well as providing acupuncture treatments in a managed care environment. Within months of completing the Medical Acupuncture for Physicians program, Dr. Kassan was recruited as a Clinical Preceptor, and has continued to be active in acupuncture education.

An avid cyclist, Dr. Kassan rides his bicycles up to 150 miles per week, plays tennis, and enjoys traveling. He is happily married and the proud father of two young boys.

TACK LAM, M.D.
 

Dr. Lam Graduated from University of Toronto medical school where he was a resident in orthopedics. He also has a PhD in bioengineering on orthopedic biomechanics.

Dr. Lam graduated from the UCLA medical acupuncture program in 1998. He presently practices occupational medicine with a large medical group in San Diego. Dr. Lam spends a day a week in integrative medicine, combining medical acupuncture with conventional biomedicine. Dr. Lam Is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture.

BRADLEY LAWRENCE , M.D.
 

Bradley lawrence, MD(H) earned his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1976. He completed a residency in family practice at St. Joseph's Hospeital in Phoenix, Arizona in 1979, and for two years thereafter worked in the Indian Health Service in Southern Arizona.

Dr. Lawrence completed the UCLA medical acupuncture course in 1987-88 and has since made medical acupuncture a part of his practice.

His professional interests, In addition to medical acupuncture, include healthful diet and lifestyle counseling, nutritional and herbal supplements, and homeopathic remedies. Dr. Lawrence is certified by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture. He is licensed by the Arizona Board of Homeopathy.

JAMES R. LEONARD , M.D.

 

Dr. James Leonard is the Director of Musculoskeletal and Myofascial Pain Management at the Alliance Institute for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Leonard received his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at U.C. College of Medicine and associated hospitals, and went immediately into private practice. During his eighteen years as an orthopaedic surgeon he became frustrated with western medicine's apparent inability to adequately treat and manage chronic and myofascial pain.

Dr. Leonard began using trigger point injections and simple acupuncture to this end, attended the UCLA Continuing Medical Education Medical Acupuncture program between November 1997 and May 1999, and is now on the faculty of this program. In June of 2000 he retired from orthopaedic surgery to further study, teach, and practice medical acupuncture on a full-time basis. He is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and pain management, and board eligible in medical acupuncture.

ALLEN McDANIELS, M.D., DABMA
  Dr. McDaniels is in private practice in San Pedro, California. His practice is devoted to medical acupuncture, preventative medicine, and health counseling. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Oregon and served as a psychiatric resident at Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar, California.

Dr. McDaniels has conducted many research projects in water, nutrition, burn treatment and medical acupuncture. In addition to serving on the Program Planning Committee and as a clinical preceptor for the Medical Acupuncture For Physicians program, Dr. McDaniels is a co-founder and past Director of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture(A.A.M.A.) and a past President of the American Foundation for Medical Acupuncture. As Chairman of the Academy's C.M.E. Committee, he obtained A.C.C.M.E. accreditation for the A.A.M.A.

SHARON MONTES, M.D.
  Dr. Montes is Director of Clinical Services at the Complementary Medicine Program. An experienced family physician, Dr. Montes is committed to providing patient care in a caring, compassionate environment, as well as combining complementary approaches with conventional medical treatments.

Dr. Montes received her medical degree from the University of Colorado and did her family medicine residency at John Peter Smith Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Texas Southwestern in Fort Worth, Texas. She has further training in the field of geriatrics. Dr. Montes began her exploration of complementary medicine during her residency and in 1996 started integrating acupuncture into her clinical practice. Dr. Montes has a special love for caring for women and elders. She has been very involved in resident and medical student education, and in promoting the teaching of complementary medicine in an academic environment.

WARREN MORGANSTEIN, D.D.S., M.P.H.
  Warren M. Morganstein received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Maryland, a Certificate from the General Practice Residency Program at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in San Francisco and his M.P.H. degree from Johns Hopkins University. He joined the faculty of the University of Maryland Dental School as the Director of the Dental Auxiliary Utilization and Training in Expanded Auxiliary Management programs in 1971. In 1974 he was appointed as Chairman of the Department of Oral Health Care Delivery (formerly Community Dentistry). Dr. Morganstein is presently the Senior Associate Dean of the Dental School, a position he has held since 1976.

Dr. Morganstein has published extensively and has made numerous presentations, both nationally and internationally. He has maintained a high level of activity as a consultant to organizations including the United States Public Health Service, the World Health Organization and the American Dental Association. Dr. Morganstein served on Committee B of the Commission on Dental Accreditation and was Chairman of the Commission on Dental Accreditation's Advanced General Dentistry Advisory Committee. Additionally, he is a member of the House of Delegates of the Maryland State Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He has served as President of the Baltimore City Dental Society and Trustee to the Maryland State Dental Association from Baltimore City.

Dr. Morganstein received his training in Acupuncture from the Medical Acupuncture for Physician's Program conducted by the UCLA Medical School. He currently serves as a clinical faculty preceptor in the UCLA program. He practices acupuncture in the Orofacial Pain Clinic at the University of Maryland Dental School. Dr. Morganstein is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He is the recipient of the Alpha Omega Foundation Recognition Award, the Alpha Omega Fraternity Presidential Citation and the Alpha Omega Baltimore Chapter, Walter I. Levine Meritorious Service Award.

NOEL NOWICKI, M.D.
  Noel C. Nowickt MD is a holistic physician-acupuncturist with over 25 years as an Internist working both in private practice and on staff at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. He is one of the few physicians who has been trained in a 3 year TCM school as a licensed acupuncturist and a medical acupuncturist through UCLA. He is Board Certified in Medical Acupuncture and very active in the AAMA New Jersey chapter. In addition to TCM he has trained in Japanese acupuncture and herbal medicine, hypnosis, manual medicine and bioenergetic healing.

Dr. Nowicki started the outpatient acupuncture clinic at Kessler Institute in 1995 and won second
prize in an international research award for a study on acupuncture for dysphagia after
stroke. This was completed under a grant from the NIH Office of Alternative Medicine for
neurological disease which had been in place at Kessler Institute. Currently he is involved in
an asthma study at the Eastern School of Acupuncture.

He has an active private practice in acupuncture, where he treats a wide variety of problems
including chronic pain, stroke and brain injury. He was the first to obtain acupuncture
privileges at two hospitals and lectures widely m the tristate area on a variety of medical and
alternative medicine subjects. Residents from three different programs rotate through his
office to observe medical acupuncture. He has been a preceptor for UCLA for 6 years and
also lectures at the Eastern School of Acupuncture. Dr. Nowicki has been featured in The New York Times and other national and local media.

JOHN REED, M.D.
  John C. Reed, MD has served as the National Medical Director of American WholeHealth from 1996 to the present. He is a board-certified family physician, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Reed has earned national recognition for his clinical skills in alternative disciplines including holistic medicine, acupuncture, cranial osteopathy and homeopathy. He served as the President of the Arizona Board of Homeopathic Medical Examiners from 1987–1993. He was the Founding Vice President of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, and a founding member of the American Holistic Medical Association.

Dr. Reed founded a physician-driven alternative medical team practice in 1982, and then merged the practice in 1995 with the Mercy Healthcare of Arizona integrated delivery system to help launch the Arizona Center for Health and Medicine, an integrated medicine group practice. At American WholeHealth he directed the formation a large multi-city interdisciplinary CAM medical group organization and a practitioner training program to service the American WholeHealth health care center operations from 1996 through 2000. He currently oversees the Medical Affairs department of the AWH health care networks operations, a national program of over 25,000 CAM practitioner types providing covered and discount access services to health plan and association members.

Dr. Reed is Senior Consultant for Program Development at the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine. He has been a faculty member of the UCLA Medical Acupuncture course from 1985 to 2001. He was a consultant for the NIH Office of Alternative Medicine from 1991-93
.

NARDA ROBINSON, DO, DVM, Dipl. ABMA, FAAMA
 

Dr. Narda G. Robinson is the director of the Complementary Medicine Service at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical
Sciences (CSU-CVMBS) and directs the CSU-CVMBS Complementary Medicine
Professional Veterinary Medical Undergraduate and Continuing Education
Training Programs in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture and Veterinary Manual
Therapy – the first ongoing training programs in these modalities at a
veterinary college.

Dr. Robinson received her AB degree in Biology from Harvard/Radcliffe College in 1982, her DO degree (Doctor of Osteopathy) from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988, and her DVM from the Colorado State University College of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences in 1997. She received her acupuncture training through the UCLA “Medical Acupuncture for Physicians” program in 1990.

In 2001, the American Board of Medical Acupuncture awarded Dr. Robinson board certification in medical acupuncture; in 2002 she became a fellow of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She now serves as Secretary on the Board of Trustees for the American Board of Medical Acupuncture. Dr. Robinson is currently pursuing a Master’s of Science degree through the CSU College of Biomedical Sciences (Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology), investigating neuroanatomic relationships of acupuncture points in non-human species and developing education materials for medical acupuncture training using virtual reality interactive media. She has authored several book chapters and is a regular contributor to Veterinary Practice News in the area of complementary veterinary medicine. Additional research involves the stimulation of tear production in dogs with dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) as an animal model. Dr. Robinson maintains a private human practice as well as a university-based veterinary practice in medical acupuncture.

ALI SAFAYAN, M.D., LAc.
 

Dr. Safayan is both physician and educator, blending one profession seamlessly into the other for the benefit of his patients and students alike.
“It is my belief that the primary role of a physician is that of educator… an adviser empowering patients by educating them. The doctor-patient relationship is a partnership between two people interested in moving in the same direction –- improving the health and well-being of the patient. I enjoy working with patients who take an active role in their healthcare.”

Dr. Safayan is currently the Medical Director of Life Path Health Center in Rockville, Maryland, and has a separate private practice at Inner Health in Washington, D.C., both providing a wide variety of complementary and alternative therapies, including naturopathy, chiropractic, massage therapy, and nutritional supplementation. Dr. Safayan is Board certified in Internal Medicine and a graduate himself of the UCLA Medical Acupuncture for Physicians course, as well as currently working towards his Doctorate in Integrative Medicine in Washington, D.C. His desire to improve patient care through a holistic and complementary approach has led him to further studies in nutrition, as well as other alternative and integrative modalities such as chelation therapy, osteopathic manual therapy, and prolotherapy.

ERIC SCHINDLER, M.D.
  Eric Schindler is a graduate of Louisiana State University Medical
School at New Orleans. He is currently in the U.S. Navy where he is a
flight surgeon. Dr. Schindler practices his medical acupuncture at the
Branch Medical Clinic at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in the
Mojave Desert in east central California as well as other locations in
the United States and the world as his job takes him.

Dr. Schindler's initial post graduate training was in family practice. Since that time he has been involved in the aerospace medicine community providing care for active duty aviation personnel, their families, and military retirees. He is involved in the test and
evaluation of aviation systems for the US Navy and has been active in investigation of aircraft crashes of various makes and models. An addition to his knowledge of Chinese medicine is his knowledge of martial arts which he has been practicing for 30 years. He often integrates the knowledge from each discipline to enhance understanding for martial artists and acupuncturists.

W. William Shay , D.O., PhD, LAc., DABMA
 

Dr. Shay earned his degree in Osteopathic Medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1973. Following internships and private practice in New York City, Dr. Shay served as medical director at the Whitebird Clinic and founded the Walama Medical Clinic in Eugene, Oregon.

Returning to Pennsylvania in 1978, Dr. Shay has maintained private practice for general family medicine, nutrition, midwifery, acupuncture and preventative medicine.

SANDRA SKATES, D.O.
  Sandra Skates, D.O. Graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle,
Washington with a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology. She
completed her D.O. Degree at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the
Pacific (now called Western University of Health Sciences) in Pomona
California in 1987. Following an extra year in Osteopathic medical school for a teaching fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM), Dr. Skates went on to a Family Practice residency in Long Beach, California.

Dr. Skates practiced family medicine and OMM in Aptos, California from 1990 to 1999. She added medical acupuncture to the mix in 1994. Currently she teaches full time in the department of OMM at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Vallejo California. She still enjoys teaching and practicing acupuncture. She has been a preceptor for the UCLA program for the past 4 years. Dr. Skates is happily married with children and enjoys scuba diving in Hawaii, running, swimming, and hiking.

RICHARD ZWEIG, M.D.
  Richard Zweig trained in internal medicine and rheumatology at UCSF and is board certified in both specialities. He has practiced internal medicine and rheumatology at Kaiser, Santa Rosa since 1982, serving as Chief of Medicine from 1988 to 1993.
He finished the UCLA acupuncture program in 1994, and has been teaching in the program since 1995. He finds acupuncture to be intellectually stimulating and therapeutically effective for the physical and spiritual afflictions caused by the arthridites.

Richard is married to Loretta Zweig, M.D. and they have three strapping sons. He enjoys hiking, gardening, bird watching, and using his chainsaw.
